First Art Class, May 11, 2024

What a great day!

This was my first class teaching in-person. Honestly, the week leading up to this day was full of

“I don’t think I can do this”

At first, the class was going right along. (If you know me, you know I can talk for 8 hours straight)

Then, I introduced the unfun part to the class…laying out the sketch using the Key Point Method. (Geometry was involved)

As with most artists I have talked to, this is sometimes called the “unfun” part of the drawing. It requires so much “brain” that by the end you really just need a break. The class was falling silent, and the silence being broken by the random *sigh or frustration.

To myself: “This is it, I am really not cutout for teaching…”

The longer the silence the more nervous I became.

But then…

I decided to do a walk-around to check everyone’s progress. To my absolute surprise, EVERYONE was on track to making perfect proportions of the sketches.

I was so proud of these people…Many having ZERO knowledge in drawing or sketching were creating better art than I see for sale on Etsy.

After the hard part was over, we were able to start applying the charcoal.

I feel almost ashamed.

I was expecting no one in my class to learn anything.
By the time we left, nearly all of the participants were leaving proud and accomplished.

I learned a lot;

1. Most doubt is just all in your head and

2. People are smart, and smarter than you.

At the end of the class, everyone spoke about how much they enjoyed it, though they would admit at one point they were very frustrated (lol)

Everyone left with a smile on their face.

Here is the evidence of the Future Rembrandts
